Champion Malanda Kisongo Promotes Inclusion Across Rise
Jan 30, 2026
Meet Malanda Kisongo
Malanda Kisongo, Rise’s Champion of the Month for December 2025, joined the team in July 2024 and currently works as a Direct Support Professional (DSP) Level 3 at Rise Coon Rapids. Since starting, he has consistently demonstrated reliability and a strong commitment to inclusion and team culture.
Before joining Rise, Malanda worked in creative fields including photography, design, and creative direction, supporting others in bringing their ideas to life. Much of his background has been people-focused, centered on building trust and showing up with intention. He was drawn to Rise because the mission “felt real” and his role would allow him to make a difference in everyday moments while maintaining people’s dignity.
Malanda’s Impact
In his role at Rise Coon Rapids, Malanda is known for stepping up to support both people served and staff. He notes that the moments that matter most are the simple ones, like helping make someone’s day better and showing up consistently for others.
Beyond his daily responsibilities as a DSP, Malanda has taken initiative in organizational efforts related to culture, identity, and inclusion. He created and led a presentation titled “We All Belong”, which was first shared with Rise’s DEI Committee and later presented to Rise teams across Minnesota. The presentation focuses on understanding diverse cultures and backgrounds, addressing racism, and reinforcing the importance of inclusion for both team members and people served.
Rise team member Oliver Carlson shared that Malanda took full ownership of the project – creating the presentation, leading discussions, and answering questions, all while remaining flexible and understanding through multiple scheduling changes. His willingness to present to additional teams reflects his commitment to strengthening Rise’s workplace culture across the entire organization.
Rise Coon Rapids Program Supervisor Gigi Rainey emphasized the impact of Malanda’s work, stating that his presentation helps break down barriers and reinforces that all team members should feel accepted and valued regardless of race or cultural background. His efforts have increased awareness and understanding across Rise sites, making an impact beyond his immediate role.
Coworkers also highlight Malanda’s ability to communicate effectively with everyone in the room, noting that he consistently goes above and beyond to support staff and people served. They also share that he adapted well to changes within the program and demonstrates strong leadership while guiding projects.

Thank you, Malanda, for your commitment to making Rise a more inclusive and positive place for everyone.
