Meet Abby Zemien

When Abby Zemien joined Rise Crystal as a Direct Support Professional in May 2022, she was looking for an opportunity to explore her growing interest in the human services field while attending college. What started as a way to gain experience quickly became a career she is passionate about. 

Before coming to Rise, Abby was a full-time student at Hamline University. While balancing classes, she worked evenings cleaning office buildings and babysat on weekends. Rise was her first full-time position in human services and allowed her to explore a future in the field. 

“I chose to work at Rise because I have a strong interest in human services,” Abby said. “Rise felt like a good fit to begin exploring and has been a great place to start my career while attending college.” 

This past spring, Abby graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in sociology while working full time at Rise and providing PCA services on the side. 

“It was definitely busy,” she said, “but I am very proud of myself for making it work while maintaining good grades.” 

Abby’s Impact

For Abby, the most rewarding part of her job is building connections with the people she supports. 

“I truly enjoy getting to know each and every one of them and applying what they share with me to help improve their experiences here at Rise,” she said. 

That commitment is something her colleagues notice every day. Whether she’s leading activities, supporting a teammate, or stepping in when help is needed, Abby is often one of the first people others turn to. 

“Anytime any help or assistance is needed, she is always there to jump in,” shared a colleague. 

Abby’s team also admires her natural leadership skills. She helps train new team members, shares her knowledge, and takes initiative when challenges arise. 

“Abby may not be the floor lead, but she does take responsibility for training new team members and helping others… She is probably the best multitasker we have at Rise Crystal,” shared another colleague. 

Abby has built a reputation as a trusted resource for both the people she supports and her coworkers. She takes the time to understand each person’s unique strengths, needs, and goals, tailoring her approach to what works best for them.  

Abby Outside of Rise

Away from work, Abby enjoys art and sports. During the spring and summer, she works at local art markets supporting a friend’s jewelry business. In the winter, she coaches middle school boys’ basketball through her city’s house league program. 

Whether she’s supporting people at Rise, coaching on the court, or helping at an art market, Abby brings the same energy and authenticity that has made her such a valued member of the Crystal team. As one colleague put it, “It is never boring with Abby around.”
