Volunteer Lauren Kozlak feels connected to the mission
Apr 1, 2026
For nearly nine years, Lauren Kozlak has been a dedicated and familiar presence at Rise, generously volunteering her time, skills, and positive energy. Lauren has made a lasting impact through her behind-the-scenes support and willingness to help wherever she’s needed.
Lauren began volunteering with Rise after responding to an advertisement seeking volunteers. “I had used Rise’s services in the past and always thought that if the right kind of position ever opened up, I would love to work there.” Lauren already felt connected to the mission and was eager to give back if the right opportunity came along. That volunteer opportunity led her to Michael’s Closet, Rise’s former clothing donation space that helped people served prepare for job interviews and new employment.
During her time there, Lauren volunteered one morning each week, organizing donations, keeping the space tidy, and ensuring popular items were always available. What she enjoyed most was helping people create outfits that suited their personalities and future goals. “I like dressing people for success,” Lauren shared. “I’m always looking for new ideas.”
Lauren’s support extends well beyond Michael’s Closet. Over the years, she also contributed to Rise’s Art Speaks program and regularly assisted the Advancement team with special projects.
Today, Lauren continues to volunteer in a variety of ways. She primarily assists with administrative and miscellaneous tasks, including organizing materials, sorting apparel, counting giveaway items, and helping with one-time projects. She appreciates the flexibility of volunteering and typically helps out every couple of weeks for a few hours at a time.
What keeps Lauren coming back after nearly a decade is the people. She enjoys the welcoming environment and the appreciation shown by both Rise team members and people served. Her visits often include friendly conversations and life updates. Over the years, she’s shared milestones like becoming a grandmother and celebrating the arrival of her family’s first great-grandchild, also the first girl in a family long full of boys.
Now retired after a long career as a CPA, Lauren values volunteering as a hands-on way to give back. The organizational work she supports aligns naturally with her professional background, and she finds satisfaction in knowing her time helps free up Rise team members to focus on their work. “Lauren is always ready to jump into any project that needs to get done, which frees up essential time for our team members,” a Rise team member shares.
Outside of Rise, Lauren enjoys spending time at the lake, fishing, traveling when possible, going out to eat, visiting her grandchildren, and spending time with her Labrador Retriever.
For anyone considering volunteering, Lauren says the people are kind, the work is meaningful, and the appreciation is real. Her nearly nine years of service are a powerful example of how consistent dedication can make a lasting difference.
