When Steve Reinardy started working at MDI in October 2011, he was hired through a contract agency as a janitor. What began as an entry-level opportunity has grown into a career built on hard work, perseverance, and a determination to succeed.

Today, Steve serves as MDI’s Safety Coordinator, where he leads safety trainings, conducts employee orientations, coordinates emergency drills, organizes CPR and First Aid certifications, and helps create a safe workplace for employees across the facility.

Born and raised in Hastings, Minnesota, Steve learned early in life that success often requires speaking up for what you need. As someone who is legally visually impaired, he faced challenges throughout school accessing information in the classroom and communicating with teachers and classmates. Instead of giving up, he continued to advocate for himself, speak up about his needs, and seek the support necessary to succeed.

“I have always had to advocate for myself in one way or another,” Steve said.

Determined to build his confidence, Steve enrolled in a communications course and worked through the shyness that once held him back. The experience helped him become a stronger communicator and public speaker. He graduated high school with a 3.7 GPA before continuing his education in computer operations and office skills.

After college, finding employment was not a simple task. Several employers were reluctant to provide accommodations or recognize his abilities. Steve eventually found a long-term position in the restaurant industry, where he worked for 13 years and earned multiple service awards. In 2010, he lost that job due to company downsizing and shortly afterward faced a serious health challenge that required hospitalization and months of treatment.

The following year brought a fresh start. Steve began volunteering at Dodge Nature Center in West St. Paul, where he found a welcoming environment and an opportunity to give back. His dedication later earned him the organization’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Around the same time, he joined MDI (Minnesota Diversified Industries), a nonprofit social enterprise that manufactures plastic packaging and provides production services while creating employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

At MDI, Steve quickly became known for his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to jump in. Rather than limiting himself to one role, he embraced opportunities throughout the organization, supporting teams across departments, from day-to-day operations to marketing initiatives.

“One of the things people recognize most about me is that I’m willing to at least try anything that’s asked of me,” Steve said.

 

Over the years, Steve took on new responsibilities throughout the organization and eventually moved into the Safety Coordinator role. He helps train new employees, supports coworkers throughout the facility, and serves as a trusted resource for both leadership and staff.

Outside of work, Steve has become a passionate advocate for disability inclusion. A graduate of Partners in Policymaking, he has used his voice to help educate policymakers and community leaders about the barriers people with disabilities continue to face. He has testified before legislators, spoken at the Minnesota Council on Disability, and met with local and state leaders to discuss issues such as transportation, employment, and accessibility.

“There are many people with disabilities who want to work and contribute, but transportation barriers often stand in the way,” Steve said.

Drawing from his own experiences, Steve works to ensure decision-makers understand how policies and services impact everyday lives. His advocacy has helped raise awareness and amplify the voices of people with disabilities throughout Minnesota.

Rise is proud to support Steve through employment services and ongoing job support. While Steve is quick to credit others who have helped him along the way, his story is a powerful example of what can happen when determination meets opportunity.

As we celebrate Disability Pride Month, Steve’s story reminds us that people thrive when they are valued for their strengths, given the chance to grow, and empowered to use their voices.
