Last year, Rise supported more than 2,500 people with disabilities and other barriers as they pursued meaningful goals and built brighter futures. This life-changing work is only possible because of generous donors like you. We hope the following success story inspires you to make your first, or renewed, gift to Rise as we continue our mission of unlocking opportunities for people in Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Eugene Green III has worked at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center since 2018. Now 29, he works full-time as a Food Production Associate in the hospital’s main kitchen. Every day, he serves meals to veterans in their rooms, washes dishes, mops, and keeps the kitchen organized.

“I’m just a guy who is really passionate about food service,” Eugene says.

Eugene originally started in the hospital cafeteria, serving food, making coffee, and stocking shelves. Through hard work, he earned a promotion and became ServSafe certified, showing his dedication to his career.

Eugene often picks up extra shifts, sometimes working close to 60 hours a week. He’s known for his strong work ethic and eagerness to help.

Eugene was first connected to Rise through Project SEARCH, a program that helps young adults with disabilities explore and find jobs. Now, he receives ongoing support from Employment Consultant Kristi Phillips. They meet weekly to talk about job goals, complete paperwork, and solve any challenges that come up. She also supports Eugene during meetings with his managers when needed.

“Eugene is always looking for ways to get better at his job,” Kristi says. “He frequently asks me to come in and evaluate him for ways that he could improve his work performance. My favorite part of working with Eugene – and everyone else I work with – is how much we learn together.”

One of Eugene’s preferred tasks is washing pots and pans because he can work in his own space and listen to music. “My favorite part of the job is serving patients and tray delivery,” he shares. “I like talking to patients, making sure they get their meals on time.”

Kristi says Eugene is kind and considerate. “He spends a little bit of extra time with the veterans when he delivers meals to make sure that they have everything they need and to ask them about their day.” His kindness extends further – Eugene is proud to share that he supported a friend to get a job in the cafeteria last year!

Eugene says Kristi’s support helps him stay organized and confident. “She’s always patient and she’s really kind,” he says. “She supports me during my check-ins with my managers and helps me keep on track with things.”

Without Rise, Kristi says Eugene might face more barriers with things like workplace communication and paperwork. “Without job supports, Eugene would have a difficult time communicating and advocating for his needs,” she says.

Over the years, Eugene has grown a lot in his role, especially with his timeliness. He’s proud of how far he’s come and is always ready to learn new skills.

Lisa Hernandez, Eugene’s supervisor at the VA, says he plays a key role on their team. “Eugene is a reliable and hard worker. He does a great job and is the first person to volunteer if we are short-handed,” she says. “He brings a great attitude to work every day which enhances our team morale.”

Kristi adds, “His supervisors at the VA are fantastic and have given him just as much support as I have, if not more.”

Outside of work, Eugene loves to travel. He recently boarded a cruise from Texas to Cozumel, Mexico. At home, he enjoys watching cooking shows and trying new recipes. He’s working with Kristi on enrolling in local cooking classes to build on his passion.

“I’ve been watching the cooks at the VA and like learning from them,” he says. Eugene’s love for cooking runs in the family. “My dad was a chef and a food service director. I’m following in his footsteps.” One day, Eugene hopes to become a cook at the VA – or even open his own bakery.

His advice to others? “Be on time, work hard, stay inspired, and be ready to help others. And always keep yourself busy.”
