MOHR Choice Awards recognizes impactful programs that support individuals with disabilities
FRIDLEY, Minn. – October 3, 2024 – “Rise with the Y,” a partnership between Rise and the Coon Rapids Emma B. Howe YMCA has been honored by the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation (MOHR), a statewide advocacy group of nonprofit day and employment services providers.
This is one of six awards recognizing exceptional programs throughout Minnesota, which ensure people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are enriched, celebrated, and given the opportunity to use their skills to add value to their communities.
“These programs are truly life-enriching for the individuals who participate in them.” explains Robin Harkonen, president of MOHR.
“Rise with the Y” was created in 2023 with the goal to connect YMCA members with people supported by Rise at a life enrichment program located within the Emma B. Howe YMCA. Rise and the Y partnered to host mixers between YMCA members and people with disabilities supported by Rise. Both groups have continued to meet through social events, arts and cultural programs, community outings, and YMCA sponsored fitness classes. New volunteer opportunities also encourage community building.
“This program is aligned with our mission of connecting people with disabilities to their communities. Relationships like this build bonds, create friendships, and contribute to a positive quality of life,” says Jodi Blume, Senior Director of Life Enrichment and Community Integration Programs at Rise.
A generous grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation funds additional staff time to plan life enrichment activities and outings needed to make the Rise with the Y program successful, along with additional costs of community-based activities, such as transportation, program fees, and more. This funding support is part of the Blue Cross Foundation’s Healthy Connections program, which works to increase connections within and across communities and generations to reduce social isolation.
