Kari Hovey took a break from her job as a speech therapist in the public schools to explore different settings and intern with Rise in assistive technology. She worke with people served at Rise Crystal who have intellectual and physical disabilities.

Having earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in speech and hearing science in 2000 and her master’s in speech language pathology in 2002, Kari said she found just what she was looking for at Rise.

“In addition to brainstorming with Rise team members about creative ways to make adaptations and improve accessibility, I helped develop a permanent place for virtual reality to support job training and wellness,” said Kari. “I facilitated a weekly adaptive communication conversation group, as well as explored funding sources for a sensory room.”

“I have learned a lot about the challenges that adults with a variety of physical and communication abilities face,” Kari added. “I enjoyed coming up with adaptations for people served that improve accessing and navigating the computer.

The “highlight” of her internship, says Kari, was getting to know Rise team members and the people served. “Rise staff have been so welcoming. Everyone was willing to answer questions and live the mission of Rise. I will return to my work as a speech therapist in the schools with a better understanding of assistive technology.

“This has been an AMAZING experience,” added Kari, whose internship ended April 21. “I feel fortunate to have been given this opportunity.  I will take with me the large network of people and resources in our community that support adults with disabilities.”
